Room Design Scenario Assignment

Overview

Most researchers agree that room design has an impact on the level of student engagement. One of the first challenges you will face in your classroom is how to arrange it. Where will I store student materials? What kind of workstations should I have? How should I arrange the desks?

From this module’s scenario you will consider 3 aspects of classroom management as it pertains to Leila:

(1) Minimizing Distractions – You will choose and discuss the three (physical) classroom distractions that are most distracting for Leila.

(2) Maximizing Instructional Access – You will choose and discuss the two (physical) instructional hindrances that most impair learning for Leila.

(3) Matching Desk Arrangement to Instruction – You will choose and discuss the (physical) problem with the overall desk arrangement and its impact on Leila with regard to instruction.

Specificity is important with this assignment; as you write your paper, you must continually ask yourself “why” and “how.” To earn full credit you must separately discuss each of the three aspects listed above regarding how to help Leila achieve her goal, and your paper must employ specific and quality discourse.

The Room Design Grading Rubric for this assignment should be considered the best source regarding what is required for successful completion. 

The Biblical integration for this assignment is to demonstrate LU School of Education’s SCRIP. SCRIP is based on Galatians 5:22, 23 as the Biblical core for teaching dispositions.

In your paper the following dispositions should be demonstrated in your solutions:

• Integrity: goodness
• Professionalism: gentleness, meekness, temperance

Include the following four sections of discussion in your paper:

1. Minimizing Distractions
2. :  From the provided Room Design Setting and the Current Room Arrangement, identify three distractors you see exemplified that are disturbing Leila in the current room design.
3. b.  Examples:  Use examples from the setting to show how each distractor you identified creates a disturbance for Leila in the current room design.
4. ? Use peer-reviewed research articles to explain why you chose each of the 3 distractors that you identified. Cite this research in your discussions and include the sources in a reference list at the end of your paper.

• Hindrances:  From the provided Room Design Setting and the Current Room Arrangement, identify two hindrances to instruction/instructional materials for Leila as they pertain to her in the current room design.
• Examples:  Use examples from the setting to show how each hindrance you identified creates a disturbance for Leila in the current room design.
• Use peer-reviewed research articles to explain why you chose each of the two hindrances that you identified. Cite this research in your discussions and include the sources in a reference list at the end of your paper.
• :  What solutions can you apply to the room design to maximize instruction/instructional access for Leila?

• Matching Desk Arrangement to Instruction
• Problem:  From the provided Room Design Setting and the Current Room Arrangement, discuss the problem with the arrangement of the students’ desks as the arrangement pertains to instruction for Leila.
• Examples:  Use examples from the setting to show how this problem with desk arrangement is unsupportive for Leila.
• What does the research say? Use peer-reviewed research articles to explain why you identified this problem with the students’ desk arrangement as being unsupportive for Leila. Cite this research in your discussions and include the sources in a reference list at the end of your paper.
• Solutions:  What solutions can you apply to the arrangement of students’ desks to better match instruction for Leila?

• Biblical Integration – SCRIP

The following are the requirements for your paper:

1. Your paper must meet a minimum of 1,200 words (not including the title page and reference page) and be formatted in current APA style.
2. You must use at least four sources in your paper:
3. One source must be the Bible (reference which translation you use, i.e. KJV, NKJV, NIV, etc.)
   1. Cite the Bible version in the body of the paper. An example of this would be:  (King James Bible, 1769/2017, John 3:16).
   1. Include the source in your reference list. An example of this would be: King James Bible. (2017). Cambridge University Press. (Original work published 1769).
4. One source must be the course textbook
5. Two sources must come from peer-reviewed research articles.
6. You may choose to use the articles that are provided in Room Design Research Articles, or you may find your own articles at the Jerry Falwell Library.
7. Research articles:
8. Must be peer-reviewed;
9. Must be published within the last seven years; and
10. Must be at least five pages.

3. You must include at least five citations within your paper for the work you borrow from all your sources.
