- Since you completed the Wellness Assessment assignment has anything changed? Are you more aware of your responses to others? Have you internalized an enhanced sense of your strengths?
- The wellness assessment of an individual does not diagnose illness or distress but rather it’s a lifelong process of an individual making decisions to live a more balanced and meaningful life in society. I tend to say things without caring about the consequences, but the wellness assessment helped me to be more mindful of my words especially around strangers because you never know what someone is going through. The lab assignments also helped in regards of exercising my mind when it comes to paying attention to details. And I believe going into social work paying attention to details and listening skills is highly needed.
- Discuss the impact that your culture and ethnicity has had on your life experiences thus far.
- Culture can impact many different aspects for people making it difficult for one to handle certain life choices. For example my family expect me to not date and experience life on my own, Instead I should wait on my oldest sister to get married and for my family to found a man suitable for me. My family believes that the oldest should get married before the youngest, and that having kids without being married is bad luck and embarrassment. My culture strengthens my mind in a way that I want to raise my future children differently and give them free will without putting cultural pressure on them.
- Describe the elements of your identity that you think may present the greatest impact on your interactions with future clients.
- Cultural background, race, sexual orientation are the elements that may present the greatest impact on interaction with future clients. Therapists should be aware of the client’s identity and how it can impact their life. I believe as a therapist separating your own beliefs, values and culture from the clients is important to avoid future conflict with the client.
- Describe the benefits and/or struggles that you or your family’s socio-economic level presented.
- Socio-economic can affect overall human functioning within society. My family and I get benefits from the government such as food stamps and Medicare which lessen life expenses. Due to my family’s low-income status, many things that other children had I couldn’t get, making life difficult especially as a teen. Probably that’s why my aunt was always depressed and tired.
- Briefly describe a significant moment in your life story that led you to want to work in Social Work, Counseling or one of the other helping professions.
- I remember back in 2018 on my way to work at exactly 10;20pm my car broke down in the middle of the road. Everyone was passing me by. A woman by the name Maria stopped her car and checked on me. Maria went as far as calling her guy friend at the police station and asking him if I could park my car at the side of the road till morning and he agreed. Maria ended up giving me a ride to work and giving me 200 dollars to get my car fixed. That’s when I knew I wanted to help others as well.
- Name the 2 strengths that you will bring to the helping profession and how they will enhance your future work.
- Two strengths that I would bring to the helping profession are empathy and active listening. Empathy is a must because it would help me understand and relate to my clients’ life experience. Active listening is important because it would help me fully understand what my clients are saying and how best I can response so I could provide the care and support needed.
- Describe 1 goal for improvement you have clearly identified to work on in terms of further enhancing your helping skills.
- One goal for improvement I identified that I need to work on is not being judgmental. I need to work on accepting people for who they are, and not what I want them to be. I need to know that no one is perfect. I’m a very judgmental person. I need to put my culture and beliefs aside and focus on the client’s needs and wants.
