Human Biological Enhancement

Word count- around 600 (not including name, title, references, etc.)

In the following, ‘the authors’ refers to the set of authors of the readings under the “Biological Enhancement” heading.

Write an essay in which you begin by explaining one of the following:

• What you consider to be the strongest argument, made by one of the authors, in favor of a controversial kind of human biological enhancement, or
• What you consider to be the strongest argument, made by one of the authors, against a controversial kind of human biological enhancement.

In the argument be sure to be specific about what kind of enhancements (enhancing in what way, with what kind of technology, etc.) the argument is about. Next, explain an objection made by one of the authors (not the same author who makes the argument) against this argument (the objection must directly be targeted against that argument to receive credit; it cannot merely be an argument for the opposing viewpoint). Finally, explain whether you think the argument can or cannot overcome the objection by raising your own argument/considerations not raised by any of the authors (do not merely pivot to a different argument for your preferred conclusion; your discussion here must concern the argument and objection from earlier). In this last part is your main opportunity to show your own original thinking as well as show how well you understand all of the readings. At each stage, you should use examples when appropriate.

The assignment will be graded based on (in descending order of importance):

• The extent to which you have followed all of the instructions above. Each of the steps described should have at least one entire paragraph devoted to it, not just a single sentence.
• Accuracy with respect to the readings and the depth and thoroughness of your understanding of the material demonstrated in your writing
• The quality of your writing (clarity, precision, structure, mechanics, etc.)
• Spelling and grammar
