Premarital Counseling

OVERVIEW

For this assignment, you will develop a working premarital curriculum by first submitting a draft of your work, followed by a final submission of the curriculum. It must be designed and presented as a PowerPoint presentation. This is an opportunity for you to create a curriculum that will help couples accurately assess their compatibility for marriage as well as help them navigate their first few years of marriage successfully. The goal is for you to create a tool that you might use in a class/small group setting or a large counseling session with a group of premarital couples. Make sure to use relevant Scripture throughout your presentation.
INSTRUCTIONS

For your draft, provide an overall outline of your project with your introduction, topic heading slides, conclusion and reference slide. It must cover 8–12 teaching sessions/weeks and have 20 slides. See the Premarital Counseling Curriculum Draft Grading Rubric to ensure you are meeting all criteria. The Draft should have:
• Introduction Session: This is not one of your 8-12 teaching sessions. (at least 4 slides)

a. One slide for cover slide (Your Name, Title of program, etc.)

b. At least one slide for Biblical supporting scripture, personal or church philosophy, Mission Statement(s), Church policy, etc.
c. At least one slide for Research support for this kind of program, empirical evidence that premarital counseling is effective, even in small groups. Most couples understand that the Bible supports strong marriages, but there is so much
we can draw from to show support in our current counseling field. This will show

the couples that you have done your homework and prepared by reading the research and knowing scriptural support.
d. An outline slide of the teaching journey. Simply stated, a road map of where the course/curriculum is going. This is often a single slide that list the topics that will be covered in the formal teaching sessions below.
• After your completed Introduction slides, you will need to begin building your actual teaching sessions. For the “draft” you only need one slide for each session you plan to teach. Topics may consist of:
a. Covenant Marriage

b. Financial Management

c. Family of Origin Issues

d. Communication Styles

e. Conflict Resolution Styles

f. Sexual Intimacy

g. Roles Within the Marriage

h. Plans for Parenting

i. Spiritual Intimacy

j. Love Languages

k. Church, Community Involvement

l. Time Management / Recreational Time

m. Personality Styles

These are just a few topics that are common for this assignment. Remember, you will need at least one for each session. (8-12 sessions) Remember to number your sessions.

• Include a “homework” slide for each session as well. You do not have to have the actual homework assignment on the slide yet, but having this blank slide helps as a place marker and reminds you of its importance in the entire teaching process. (one slide)
• A Reference/Bibliography slide at the end. Although this will not be complete, include one to keep your format/structure for the project. (at least one slide)
As you can see, this Draft Assignment gets you started with a completed introduction and the teaching/weekly slide outline with (homework slides).
