3M intends to develop ground-breaking products and is ranked as the third most inventive technological business globally. The goal of 3M is simple: to develop goods that make everyone’s life better. This is done in part through the use of Six Sigma. Six Sigma is a specific management approach that was developed and updated since its introduction in 1986. It is centered on proactively averting issues with corporate operations and output. Like many other businesses, 3M changed its infrastructure and used the Six Sigma management approach. The “World’s Most Ethical Company” has become a major developer in technology, energy, and other industries because of the method’s success. 3M now offers a thorough case study that shows how Six Sigma changed their company.
After reading the case study from Part VII Case Studies in your textbook, answer the following questions within your 2–3 page paper (not counting the title and reference page). Your paper must contain a title and reference page in APA 7 format, be written in Times New Roman 12 font, and be double-spaced.
- What are the benefits and costs of a Lean Six Sigma program and how should they be tracked?
- How should the various functional areas in the organization be included in the Lean Six Sigma initiative, and what role should senior and middle management play in this change initiative?
- Do you agree with any of the points made by skeptics about the original Six Sigma program at 3M? Explain why they believe that skepticism is warranted.
- How will Lean Six Sigma affect the innovative culture at 3M, and is Lean Six Sigma enough?
- How does Lean Six Sigma in 3M differ from traditional TQM programs? (Schroeder & Goldstein, 2024)
