The role of Safety Management Systems (SMS) is an explicit element of the corporate management responsibility that sets out the company’s safety policy and how it intends to manage safety as an integral part of its overall business. 
Part 1
What is a Safety Management System and how is it structured? Give a brief overview of the reasons why SMS was introduced.
Which organisations in aviation are required to have an SMS?
How important is it for an organisation to have a strong safety culture and what are the indicators of a strong safety culture?   (25% of the marks awarded)
Part 2  
SMS can be implemented within an airline or airport community / company etc.  Find a well-documented air accident that happened before 2010 and comment on how a fully operative SMS could have prevented this accident (please discuss with the module leader your choice of accident) by answering the questions below:  
Highlight what the main failures in the accident were e.g.in the Birmingham accident with British Airways, a window blew out as a result of poor maintenance procedures the day before!
Determine how an SMS could have prevented the main hazards and risks (identified in the accident you have chosen to analyse) if an SMS had been implemented prior to the accident. Make sure that you think of appropriate new safety management policies, safety risk management processes and procedures that need to be followed in future.   (50% of the marks awarded)
Part 3
After the September 11 attacks, questions were raised regarding the effectiveness of aircraft security then. Evaluate the effectiveness of at least five changes that were introduced after 9/11 to increase aircraft security. What is the importance of national and international co-operation in identifying relationships and new patterns of thinking? (25 % of the marks awarded)
