Requirements

• Academic coursework must:
  • Be written in academic style using Harvard referencing and be correctly formatted.
  • Demonstrate that you have read and thought about the debates and academic readings.
  • Be clearly introduced and concluded.
  • Include a clearly articulated and well supported argument that critically engages with debates and issues in the academic literature (using citations, examples, etc).
• Where you draw on information that is not your own (i.e. paraphrased ideas as well as facts and figures not in common knowledge) you must attribute the source using a citation in the text and with the full reference in the bibliography.

Specific guidance on writing a case study essay

1. As with all good academic essays, your introduction must not only state what you intend to do but also what position you are taking in relation to the question, how you will address it in terms of the concepts you will be using, and the case study chosen AS WELL AS what you will argue clearly stated. Your conclusion must not only sum up what you have done, what you have argued and how. It also needs to explore the implications of your argument.
2. The first part of the body of the essay, needs to briefly locate your argument in the theoretical literature and explain what you mean by the key concept you are using. Link this specifically to your argument and how the existing literature enables you to build it.
3. The second part of the essay needs to briefly the case study and contextualize it then explain why you have chosen it and how it illustrates or helps you further the argument
4. The third part needs to analyse the case study and explore the key point(s) your argument makes in relation to the question.
