Roles of Governments and International Organisations

Question

‘International organisations increasingly affect the lives of individuals everywhere by shaping the distribution of power and making policies that were previously left to states’ (Park, 2020:325). Analyse this statement paying close attention to the state/IO relationship and its impact on business. How can IOs/IGOs contribute to making the world a better and safer place?

Notes for the assignment :

1. Your answer should focus on the roles of governments and international governmental organisations (IOs or IGOs) and their effectiveness in contributing to the IPE (International Political Economy). You may refer to crises (for example financial crisis or climate change) and government/IGO responses to illustrate your answer.
2. Your answer should refer to the leading IOs/IGOs that impact on the IPE and on business.
3. Your answer should challenge typical orthodoxies such as free market or Neoliberal capitalism, or the orthodox approach to development (Key sources to use – Evans and Thomas, 2020; Phillips, 2020).
4. You should conclude with remarks on how to ensure a positive future for the IPE and/or the business environment.

Note: this question is about IOs. This provides an opportunity to refer to key IR theories – what is the Realist/Neorealist view of IOs? What is the liberal view/ how did Bretton Woods relate to the liberal trading environment and the role of IOs? What is the constructivist position regarding IOs?

If you do not include theoretical content you are missing a key theme – one that is expected in a strong answer – or even a weak answer – to the question set.
