Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your integration of the theoretical and practice knowledge you have obtained this semester regarding the development of a social work prevention strategy to obtain your stated health, behavioral health, or social concern outcome. The assignment will require you to make a compelling argument for addressing this issue, summarize the components of the prevention strategy, support your recommendations, and establish an implementation timeline. To do so, the assignment will require that you provide the compelling argument in a format that demonstrates your ability to present the prevention strategy to an audience that has oversight or funding responsibilities. Because such presentations are limited to 10 – 15 minutes of a meeting agenda, the presentation will be a synopsis based upon your extensive analysis of the problem and review of the diversity of prevention strategies. This will require you to be succinct and apply a critical analysis of the information that is presented to make your case statement.
Be creative. Have fun. But don’t forget to hit all the points included in the outline. The use of charts, graphs, photos, bulleted lists, etc. is encouraged. The mock presentation will require about 20-30 slides to achieve the required components.
Directions
For maximum points for the assignment, you must thoroughly complete the following steps below. Be sure to use these steps, and the rubric below, to guide your assignment to its completion.
Step 1: Introductory Slide (5 points) (Competencies 1, 7, 8)
- Summarize the problem that you are addressing and the Prevention Strategy that you are recommending.
- Identify the target audience for your presentation, e.g. agency administrator, board or board committee, potential funder, parents, teachers, school board, editorial board.
Step 2: Problem Definition (10 points)
- In the next 4 – 5 slides, identify a social problem that require a prevention strategy (primary, secondary, or tertiary)
- The prevention strategy may address the issue from a micro or macro perspective (Competencies 2, 3, 4).
- Begin with the problem definition and make a compelling argument for why this problem needs to be prevented (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4).
- Use national perspectives as well as local perspectives using prevalence data, service data, or other relevant data to describe the following and support your position (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4).
- Identify the impact or consequences of this problem
Step 3: Causal Chain (10 points)
In the next 2 – 3 slides:
- Identify the causal chain that explains the condition and contributing factors. (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4)
- Identify where in that causal chain the prevention program will intervene. This section should address the following points (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4):
- Etiologies, models and/or theories of causation
- Individual (microbiological, genetic, neurological, psychological), interpersonal (family, school, peer group, neighborhood), and sociocultural/structural factors associated with the outcome
- Established and emerging risk and protective factors
- Disparities and disproportionality (such as gender, racial/ethnic, cultural, age, disability, socioeconomic, etc.) and cross-cultural comparisons
- Co-occurrence, co-morbidity; co-mortality, where indicated
Step 4: Target Population (10 points)
In the next 1 – 2 slides:
- Clearly define the target population for the intervention (Competencies 1, 7, 8).
- Identify others who you would engage in defining the problem/solution including active and potential collaborators (Competencies 1, 2, 6, 7, 8)
Step 5: Community Mapping and Collaborators (5 points)
In the next 2 – 3 slides:
- Identify the potential collaborators in addressing this problem
- Identify potential strengths and resources that may be mobilized through the prevention strategy
- Identify those in the community that support this approach
- Anticipate areas of resistance and address these proactively in the presentation
Step 6: Prevention Approach (20 points)
In the next 5 – 8 slides:
- Describe an intervention strategy (or multiple strategies) that you believe represent effective solutions to addressing the identified problem with the target population based on your review of the literature and other data (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8).
- Describe and identify strengths of that approach and any modifications that you see as necessary to fit the needs of your population (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8).
Step 7: Prevention Content (10 points)
In the next 2 – 3 slides:
- Summarize the approach, methodology, dosage, setting, and outline of content of the prevention program (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8).
- If the prevention strategy is curriculum based, you may use the program’s Table of Contents or Activities as an outline for this section.
Step 8: Implementation Time Lines and Costs (10 points) (Competencies 1,3,4,6,9)
In the next 2 – 3 slides:
- Provide a GANTT Chart that outlines the tasks and time required to move this prevention program from approval to operational.
- The tasks or key activities should be logically ordered
- The time required to achieve the completion of each task should be reasonable and doable
- Present the costs for the program implementation: purchase or development costs, materials, training/certification if required, travel and expenses for training if not available locally (Competencies 1, 3, 4, 6).
Step 9: Outcomes (10 points)
In the next 1 or 2 slides:
- Identify the expected outcome(s) of the prevention program and how the program will be evaluated (Competencies 1, 9),
Step 10: APA Formatting and Annotated Bibliography (10 points)
Ensure the following areas are completed:
- Your mock PowerPoint presentation should adhere to APA 6th style and must include a title slide, reference, and annotated bibliography section.
The last slide should provide a list of at least 10 references in APA style.
