Contemporary Policy Issue in International Relations Theory

Students shall be asked to write a paper (3-4 pages) analyzing a contemporary policy issue through the lens of an International Relations THEORY of your choice. Policy issues/topics:

1. The Rise of New Global Powers:  Is there likely to be another hegemonic war in this century? (Why, or why not? Explain with reference to theory.)
2. Nuclear Proliferation: What, if anything, is to be done about Iran and North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons capability (and who is to do it?) Explain with reference to theory.
3. Humanitarian Intervention: Do foreign powers have a responsibility to intervene in civil wars and crises, such as in Syria, in order to alleviate human suffering and (possibly) end the crisis? Explain your answer with reference to theory.

Acceptable Sources:

Students must only select relevant peer-reviewed academic journal article(s) for their written assignment. Other sources (Magazine articles, newspaper articles, Websites, working papers, monographs) are not acceptable for this purpose.
