Emotional Intelligence and Transformational Leadership

Emotional Intelligence in Advanced Nursing Practice

Emotional intelligence helps an individual to perceive and generate emotions towards assisting the thought process in handling interpersonal relationships (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). The attributes of emotional intelligence have had significant benefits in my advanced nursing practice experience. Through my self-awareness, I can understand my moods and motivations towards the patients.

Primarily, I manage personal issues by setting them aside and attending to the sick appropriately. I also empathize with the patients. Essentially, I place myself in the patients’ position and therefore accord the individuals the care they need owing to their illnesses.

Further, I employ my social skills towards creating a good relationship with both patients and my colleagues. Seccareccia et al. (2015) observe that maintaining a healthy relationship with others promotes cooperation and peaceful co-existence. I have recently exploited my social skills in uniting members of my unit in the health facilities I have worked, as well as gaining trust from my patients.

The benefits highlighted above have the potential to improve my future Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Self-awareness will promote my positive interaction with the sick without allowing my emotions interfere with my work. I will also be able to employ sensitivity in addressing patients’ concerns and illnesses. The emotional intelligence attribute of empathy will be a guiding pillar in my profession. I endeavor to offer patient-centered care to all hospitalized persons.

Further, I aspire to refine my social skills towards progressing in my advanced nursing practice. Pryke, Lunic and Badi (2015)argue that good human relations contribute positively towards career success. Besides, proper communication is essential for a DNP practitioner. I, therefore, look forward to a rewarding experience in my relationship with patients and colleagues in my future nursing profession. I will also ensure that any conflicts arising do not create a lift between my colleagues and me through practical problem-solving skills.

Attributes of Transformational Leadership

Scholars argue that transformational leadership skills are an essential part of the nursing profession (Spano-Szekely, Griffin, Clavelle, & Fitzpatrick, 2016). Fundamentally, the attributes of transformational leadership positively shape one’s nursing practice experience(Weng, Huang, Chen, & Chang, 2015). I have gained the courage to overcome my fears and weaknesses. Before I decided to pursue a course in nursing, I was always afraid of attending to patients with serious injuries.

However, the knowledge I have acquired in the course of my studies has helped me overcome such fears. I am also able to competitively execute leadership in my small group within the nursing department. I have also set a clear vision of what I want to achieve in my career. In the next five years, I aspire to be among the board members in the regional health organization towards addressing patients’ and nurses’ concerns. Lastly, I have gained self-motivation. Despite the complexity of the nursing studies and practice, I am motivated to accomplish my objectives.

I am positive that I will carry the attributes of transformational leadership in my future DNP-prepared nursing practice. Grossman and Valiga (2016)encourage medical practitioners to embrace leadership skills as a crucial tool in handling issues within a help facility. Courage will help me face and overcome the stumbling blocks in my career. Some of the anticipated hardships include critiquing my colleagues in areas where there is a conflict of opinions.

I have, in the past, had difficulties voicing my opinions due to the fear of upsetting my workmates. However, as a leader, I have to embrace courage as an essential attribute. I also look forward to setting a fruitful personal and professional vision, as well as exploiting self-motivation to offer the best services in the health sector. In a nutshell, courage, setting a clear vision and self-motivation will be my pathways towards successful transformational leadership in my DNP profession.
