From your Chapter 8 readings, discuss the following:

1. What if…..you are a newly hired correctional officer in the state prison system? During your first week on the job, you witness a co-worker violently attack a prisoner who had spit on him. You are the only witness. What action do you take? Explain.

2. How is the idea of total power in the prison setting defective? What steps can be taken to maximize the power of correctional officers?

3. If you were a prison warden, what sorts of management problems should you expect to face? How would you go about solving them?

When responding to the discussion questions, be sure to reference course materials to support your conclusions and opinions. By doing so, you make a stronger case to support your learning. You will be evaluated on how well you support your claims. 

In order to receive the maximum points for each discussion, students are expected to post an initial post with 300 or more words in excellent quality (i.e., the answer is an analysis of course issues and vivid descriptions of the arguments in a logical structure).

Guidelines for Discussion Board Postings

1. Late initial post – Minus 10 points

2. All posts posted on the same date – Minus 40 points.

3. Grammar problems – Minus 2 to 10 points

4. Failure to have the minimum number of words per post (Quotations, references/citings

not included in the minimum number of words) – Minus 2 to 10 points

5. Off-topic or non-supportive posts (references/citations) – Minus 2-10 points

6. Only one post – Minus 40 points

7. Only two posts – Minus 20 points

8. No posts – Minus 60 points or zero for the assignment

9. Posting a blank initial (first post) that is not corrected and reposted with relevant content

within 10 minutes will result in a zero for that week’s discussion. This is to discourage anyone from gaining access to the forum to read other students’ initial and other posts without first posting their own initial post.

10. Plagiarism in any post – Minus 40 points and one warning for the first violation. If there is plagiarism in more than one post for that week’s discussion, a grade of zero will be given. Repeat violations will result in a zero for that week’s discussion and possible formal action for violating the UHD Academic Honesty policy.

Any combination of the above, except for #8, may result in a cumulative number or additional minus points for the assignment.
