Janet Harewood is represents the very best of UNC Kenan-Flagler’s core values: excellence, leadership, integrity, inclusion, community and teamwork. She is a Consortium member, club leader, Business Communication Center consultant, teaching assistant and Kenan Scholar. She and her classmates founded the Black Business Student Association (BBSA) and she now serves as its co-president, leading the way for future student leaders.

Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, Janet moved to Washington, D.C. where she attended Howard University. She has worked with nonprofit organizations and as an operations director in private wealth management at Morgan Stanley. At UNC Kenan-Flagler she is focusing on marketing and data analytics and will join Verizon after she graduates.

Winning the Liberty Mutual Insurance Commercial Lines President’s award was my greatest professional  accomplishment and it wouldn’t have been possible without leveraging the neglected Spanish speaking business owner community that preferred to avoid translation services or language hotlines altogether. Although it is very common to use language translation services for personal lines insurance customers, due to the complexity of commercial insurance it isn’t very practical since even native Spanish speaking insurance agents and underwriters struggle to find the correct Spanish word for a given word or concept in commercial insurance.

Although it wasn’t practical to become fluent in Spanish overnight, it was possible to learn key phrases that were often mistranslated or various pain points that occurred when explaining commercial insurance coverage. As an underwriter my only source of customers were brought to me by my network of local agents. I was able to get many of the Spanish agents that were already connected to our department to believe in my cause of writing good policies without using language barrier excuses to unethically cut corners or take advantage of them by selling them a product they couldn’t use or didn’t understand. I was able to get the agents to tutor me in Spanish and market me to their customers as the Spanish friendly underwriter that they could trust their business with. Within a few months I was able to expand our department to an underrepresented demographic and the amount of new customers that wanted to work exclusively with me was so large that I had to enlist other people in my department to satisfy this untapped once neglected customer base.

My contribution to the Kenan-Flagler community is being a problem solver and a risk taker. Instead of being a pioneer I could have easily just followed the mindset of everyone else in the department and assumed Spanish business owners only wanted to work with other fluent Spanish speaking individuals, but I was able to analyze the problem and figure out the core issue was trust. While I am a current student and after I graduate and join the alumni community I am sure there will be plenty of problems to solve and hopefully the curriculum will make me a better risk taker as well so I can find low risk opportunities to help the school expand its influence.
